Bud Light – Loser
Bud Light’s attempt at a festive marketing campaign included the use of the ill thought-out hashtag #UpForWhatever.
The tweet (pictured above) was deleted after only two hours due to the backlash the company received from social media. Once the tweet was deleted a company spokesperson said: “We understand some people misunderstood our St. Patrick’s Day post and apologize to anyone who was offended.” Some of the replies to the said tweet were great, as below.
The Irish Board of Tourism – Winner
Well, let’s face it, if you can’t get your St. Patrick’s Day marketing right when you work for the Irish tourist board, you’ve got a problem. Luckily though, everyone’s favourite Irish actor, Liam Neeson was called on to launch ‘the world goes green on St Patrick’s day’ video which shows Ireland in all of its natural green glory.
As part of the campaign 150 landmarks around the world were also lit up green in honour of the Irish patron saint. This included the London Eye, Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum in Rome and Sydney Opera House. The stunt cost around €65,000, so hopefully a fair few holiday makers will be spurred on to Ireland this summer!
Why Google Glass Failed
When Google first launched its most futuristic piece of wearable tech in 2013, the media hype was huge, and this was its downfall according to Astro Teller, the head of Google X division where Glass was conceived and managed told a packed speaker session at SXSW in Austin, Texas, this week. Teller went on to say: “(Glass) was one of those things that we had to get out into the world as soon as possible. We learned a lot of things about the tech, like the battery. It was also valuable for social testing, and I’m really grateful for all of the fearless pioneers who went on that adventure with us.” He then went on to talk about how the future of his department has some other rather space-age projects on at the moment such as self-driving cars, connected contact lenses and internet balloons.
One Direction Home for Zayn
Oh no! Directioners around the world are mourning the temporary loss of Zayn Malik from the Asian leg of their world tour after he was flown back to Britain due to stress this week. Since the news broke yesterday, #HaveAGoodRestZayn has been trending on Twitter. Of course, this has stoked widespread rumours that this is the end of 1D as we know it. Earlier in the week, Zayn came under fire when photos of him and a girl that wasn’t his fiancé Perrie Edwards from LittleMix. His response on Twitter was retweeted over 300,000 times.
Today’s solar eclipse is the first total eclipse since 1999, which means it is the first one since YouTube, Facebook and Twitter were setup (I know, what did we do before them, right?). #eclipse2015 is already trending and I’m sure everyone’s social media feeds will be littered with photos, videos and status updates about the rare phenomenon.
