Ad blocking has been a major talking point this week with the news of Apple now allowing ad blockers into its app store. iPhone users with the latest iOS 9 update will be able to install ad blocking apps to block advertisements from appearing in any web view on their device. Soon after the update was released, ad blockers shot to the top of the company’s App Store.
In August, PageFair published an infographic detailing just how fast the ad blocking market had grown between Q2 2014 and Q2 2015. With software now available on smartphones in the west, it’s expected that this trend will continue on an upward trajectory.
Supporters of Ad-blockers claim that the software is necessary. It will force publishers to abandon huge, memory-hogging ads on their web pages, which absorb processing power and battery capacity of smartphones. They could also discourage companies from installing third-party tracking scripts, which erode people’s privacy and security, on their sites.
On the flip side, those advocating the extinction of ad blocking software demand internet users to value the importance of ad revenue to the internet ecosystem. “Server costs, maintenance, research, creating content are all things that cost a lot of money, and without advertising revenue, sites will have to find other ways to pay for these things. This can lead to sites having to use more intrusive ads, or start charging money from the users. Although it looks like blockers are here to stay, with the right strategy and awareness of alternatives such as native advertising, there is help at hand in the era of ad blocking.
British Gas Data Leak: Third major UK security breach this week
2200 British Gas customers were contacted yesterday to be made aware that their login credentials had been posted online in an unexplained data breach; the third serious UK security breach this week following the Marks & Spencer and TalkTalk mishaps. The email ensured customers that their information remains encrypted, stored securely and that their payment data is not at risk. Managing Director for EMEA at enterprise software firm Accelion, spoke of how every organisation needs to take their cyber security and data leak prevention methods more seriously.
The account details were posted to online text sharing service Pastebin for a short time only. Details of the breach will be sent to the Information Commissioner’s Office, British Gas said.
Spectre Hits The Big Screen
Before the almost certainty of Star Wars eclipsing the UK box office record in December, the latest instalment of the James Bond franchise finally hit the big screen on Monday. The bizarre decision to open on a Monday appears to be paying off, breaking the Tuesday box office record at £6.3m, beating Skyfall’s £6.2m opening day which was on a Friday. With IMDB giving Spectre a 7.9 and Rotten Tomatoes, 79%, the movie has been met with positive critical acclaim and the public reception has generally been encouraging. Mattel Release New Barbie Ad
Toy manufacturing company Mattel finally released a realistic and empowering Barbie ad for children to aspire to. “What happens when girls are free to imagine they can be anything?” The ad shows adults looking on in awe at children as they act out various professions in front of them. We won’t spoil the ending!
