Instagram vs. Snapchat?

The biggest news in the world of social media this week is Instagram’s latest Stories update. It’s fair to say it’s definitely caused a bit of a stir, with users across the world claiming that Instagram has blatantly ripped off Snapchat. However, in an interview with TechCrunch, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom openly admits that Snapchat “deserves all the credit” for Stories, just like Instagram deserves all the credit for their well-known filters feature. Throughout the years, social media channels have ripped each other off all the time, however, it’s rare to hear them openly admit to it! It looks like Stories will be here to stay on both social media channels, watch this space to see if this impacts the number of new users on each channel…

Olympic Athletes Slam Rio Accommodation

Excitement is building up to the Rio Olympics 2016 opening ceremony tomorrow, however, it’s been slightly dampened after athletes have been sharing their accommodation woes on social media. Australian basketball player Andrew Bogut shared a picture of himself threading hooks through a shower curtain, as his bathroom had come without one, kicking off the hashtag #IOCLuxuryLodging. It’s not just the Australian team, the Indian hockey team claims they have no furniture, and the Chinese media team have reported broken bathrooms, no water, and even no electricity in some of their most recent tweets. Hopefully, these accommodation problems won’t dampen the athletes’ spirits, and we look forward to the games beginning!

Twitter mix up for Ilkay Gundogan and Mesut Ozil

Ilkay Gundogan, Manchester City midfielder, tweeted earlier this week that he was really happy to be joining Arsenal before the last game of their US tour, along with the hashtag #YaGunnersYa… Hmm, something doesn’t quite add up there! It actually seems that the person running the accounts of Ilkay Gundogan and Mesut Ozil had a major moment of embarrassment yesterday and mixed up the social media accounts. It’s a bit of a disappointment for fans who think they’re interacting directly with their favourite footballers, and this mix-up highlights the probability that their tweets may not even be seen by the footballers themselves. Nevertheless, normal service resumed and both accounts were updated later that day – let’s hope that when the new Premier League season starts there won’t be any more confusion!

And finally…

BBC presenter Louise Lear’s laughing fit on live TV didn’t go unnoticed on social media. Louise was presenting the weather forecast alongside Simon McCoy, and as she came on camera it was clear to see she already had the giggles, and couldn’t quite pull it together throughout the broadcast. However, despite the lack of weather update, social media users loved her. No one has stated what caused her to laugh until she cried, but it would be great if she could let us in on the joke!
