Facebook Gets Spooky

Just in time for the Halloween season, Facebook has launched Snapchat-style filters which can be applied to its live streaming service. The masks include a witch, pumpkin, evil queen and skeleton. And if one Halloween related update wasn’t enough for you from Facebook, they have temporarily replaced their reactions emojis with spooky faces too. 

Twitter Closes Vine

vineTwitter announced this week that it is to be shutting down its six-second looping video app, Vine, in a bid to rescue the fortunes of the social media channel. Since its launch in 2013, Vine has had millions of videos uploaded with many brands embracing the video sharing app. In a blog post on Twitter’s company website, it was clarified that no videos will be lost as the website will remain live for now but the app, which is the only way to create new videos, will be discontinued in the coming months. The news comes in the aftermath of another announcement from Twitter which revealed it would be cutting almost 10% of its global workforce in order to make a takeover bid more appealing. 

End of a Madeira 

This week the final of The Great British Bake Off took place with record numbers of viewers tuning in – over 14.8 million viewers at the show’s climax. Brands were quick to jump on the bandwagon with the popularity of the show and released numerous social media campaigns, riding the wave of the trending hashtag #GBBO. Some brands opted to start conversations with viewers over who will win, others mourned the end of an era as this is the last series to be aired on the BBC. 

The London Dungeon went one step further and organised a hearse to be parked outside the BBC building to a flurry of “mourners” who presented victoria sponge cakes and flowers adorned with the letters “RIP GBBO”. As part of the show’s move to Channel 4, it will be losing baking royalty Mary Berry, as well as the show’s pun-tastic presenting duo, Mel and Sue. The news has left fans wondering if it will ever be the same again. 

And Finally… It’s Fun to Stay at YOPA

If you’ve been wondering what the 70s disco band, the Village People, have been up to recently, they are about to return to our screens in a series of adverts for online property agents, YOPA. In a series of three adverts, the Village People decide to move house and get in YOPA to sell their property. The adverts are filled with YMCA related puns and will certainly make you chuckle. Here’s my favourite out of the three.
