Facebook loses $500m in virtual reality court case

Technology firm Oculus, owned by Facebook, has been sued for $500m after they had been found to have breached a contract with video game developer Zenimax when they launched their own VR headset. Zenimax alleged that Oculus had copied their technology when they launched their own VR product, the Rift. This argument was rejected by the jury, however, they did find Oculus guilty of infringing copyright, and the co-founder of Oculus, Palmer Luckey, was found to have broken a non-disclosure agreement. No doubt this court case has overshadowed Facebook’s end of year results; their net profit more than doubled to $3.6bn in the fourth quarter, helped by a 53% growth in advertising revenue.

Beyoncé breaks the internet

If you didn’t hear the good news, Beyoncé has announced she’s pregnant with twins – and while doing so, she managed to become the Queen of Instagram. Her announcement has become the most liked photo on Instagram, with over 9.1million likes and counting. Previously, Selena Gomez held the top spot, with a picture of her sipping a bottle of Coca Cola. Selena’s post has a mere 6.3million likes, so it looks like Beyoncé’s going to keep her throne for a long time. 

Winona’s launched a new meme

Awards season is in full swing, and this week we’ve had the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. Amongst the many winners, Netflix’s Stranger Things won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. However, most of the attention has been on Winona Ryder’s animated reaction on stage. Predictably, her reaction has been discussed all over social media, and a new meme is born. Co-star, Gaten Matarazzo commented on her strange reaction by saying “I think it’s just that she couldn’t hear what David [Harbour] was saying.” He also added that the cast had no ill will towards Ryder, and they were just happy to be together. 


Grandfather’s plea for fishing mate goes viral

A 75-year-old grandfather, Ray Johnstone, has been offered holidays all over Australia after his classified ad on Gumtree went viral. He’s looking for a fishing companion after his friend died, and his plea has reached all over the world, propelled by a social media campaign #IllFishWithRay. More than 100 people around Australia have offered to fish with Mr. Johnstone, so he can have his pick of fishing trips!


And Finally…

It’s refreshing to see some positive messages in the media, and this week it’s in the form of a video by Danish TV2. Director, Asger Leth, gathers people from various different backgrounds, to show how we all share common ground in aspects of our lives despite our differences. The video has been viewed over 31 million times on Facebook, and has over 900,000 shares. Take a look for yourself…
