Last year we looked at global opportunities for online retailers and found that consumers across the world are becoming increasingly confident in buying online. Almost 42% of the world’s population has access to the internet (January 2015) and, based on these trends, it’s expected that mobile will push internet penetration beyond 50% by late 2016.

2014 was a milestone year for growth across all things digital, and reports indicate that this year will see even more impressive numbers. Mobile increasingly dominates the digital world, and as cheaper handsets and more affordable data connections reach further, growth in mobile retail is inevitable.

eMarketer suggests that average order values grew faster on smartphones than on any other device. Meanwhile, average revenue per visit was up 147.0% on smartphones—far higher than the growth rate on tablets and PCs.

Additionally, with mobile-oriented services like WhatsApp, WeChat and Facebook Messenger achieving the top social media ranking spots in some of the world’s biggest economies, it’s clear that much of our digital behavior is now converging around mobile devices.

In our new and updated 2015 infographic, you’ll find an overview of the industry’s up-and-comers, time spent online per device, the growth in the mobile market and online habits across the globe.
