Saturday 4th July will see a brave team of 22 take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. The walkers will be racking up a total of 24.5 miles over a combined height of 2,142 metres – all in aid of the Angelman Syndrome Support Education Research Trust (ASSERT).
Angelman Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder which causes severe learning difficulties. ASSERT aims to provide support to families and carers, to educate others about this condition and also to fund research, which has already benefited families worldwide.
Starting out at 6.30am, the trek begins at Pen-y-Gent in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Here there is a café where walkers can clock out at the start before clocking back in many hours later, hopefully without too many blisters. With an ascent of 691 metres, this is the smallest peak but also one of the steepest.
Next, from Ribblehead, walkers will head left alongside the viaduct and crossing a railway to reach the summit of Whernside, which stands at 728 metres – the tallest of the trio. Finally, the climb continues along the ridge to Ingleborough, passing the Hill Inn. Tired legs will be grateful of the steady descent back down to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, where walkers who complete the challenge in under 12 hours are presented with a certificate after clocking back in at the café.
